Where is Yucatan, Mexico?
Akil.JPG

The state of Yucatan is located in the south eastern part of Mexico, a few hours drive west from Cancun. Yucatan is known for its beautiful cenotes, underground springs and for its rich maya history evident with major ruin sites, including Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. Mérida, the capital of Yucatan, is a bustling colonial city, and the greater Mérida metropolitan area is home to over a million inhabitants.

Our work is in pueblos, the rural communities where way of life is a different world from the city. Many families live in one-room houses, often with a thatched roof and sometimes built with walls made of wooden sticks and plastic bags. Bathrooms, clean water and daily meals are not always a given.

According to studies, while the state has recently experienced an economic boom, not all zones receive the benefits of the improvement , and so poverty in rural areas continues and many indigenous families still lack decent housing.
